When 2 Become 1.

The day after Steffy asked me to create an Ode for her future husband, I woke up with the Spice Girls in my head. When 2 Become 1.

It got me thinking about what marriage actually is. Not fusion, but overlap. Two separate lives that remain distinct while forming something new together.

The sculpture holds two sets of 11 translucent slides, 22 in total, capturing defining moments from each of their lives. Layered on top of each other, they create double exposures: new images emerging from the collision of two histories. New memory written on the wall.

Every material carries its own logic. Newspapers from the days they were born, because that is where their stories started. Catalpa wood from Amsterdam, a tree with two-fold flowers and a heart-shaped leaf, its rings recording time the way the earth records history. Black Taurus marble, because it looks like the earth seen from the moon. Brass lines at the front, rising separately before converging.

Even the numbers are embedded: the slides are 11 by 22 cm. Ones, twos, and their multiples run through every element of the work.

Marriage as overlap rather than fusion. Two lives, still visible, still distinct, making something neither could alone.
