Forty rays of light

She'd been wanting this lamp for years. For her 40th birthday, her people knew exactly what to do.

Laura wanted it as a wall lamp—not quite how I'd originally made it. So I reimagined it. For her. From floor to wall, from dream to reality.

This object has a history before her. It began as a self-portrait—a radiating sun structure I made to investigate how light holds memory. When lit, the rods cast shadows that extend the form far beyond its physical boundaries. The object ends where the shadows begin.

Translating it from floor to wall wasn't just a technical problem. It changed how the light moves, how the shadows fall, how the room becomes part of the work. Same object, different spatial logic.

A true custom ode for a special milestone, and a reminder that the best commissions ask you to see your own work differently.
